MICHAEL GREGORASH Peacefully, after a short illness, on Friday, March 3, 2000, Mr. Michael Gregorash, age 80 years, dearly beloved husband of Maria, passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital. Michael was born November 21, 1919 and raised in Sandy Lake, Man. In 1939, he enlisted in the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, serving in rank of LS Corporal. He served overseas - England, Italy, France, Belgium and Holland. After his honourable discharge from active service, he returned back home and in 1947 married Maria Peleshok of Menzie, Man. and they moved to Winnipeg. He was employed at C.N.R. until his retirement. He was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, a member of Ukrainian Canadian Veterans Association, a member of Symington Diesel Club, a member and a senior member of Ukrainian Legion Branch #141. Comrade Gregorash joined the Legion Branch in 1948. From 1948 to 1951, he served on the House Committee as well as Membership Committee and in 1967 he was awarded a Certificate of Merit, Branch Level for his untiring service with the Color Party 141. Michael had been a Flag Bearer since the inception of the Color Party. In 1950 he also served on the Branch 141 Air Cadet Committee to 573 Squadron and in 1978 received a Branch Level Certificate for his services. Comrade Gregorash was active with the Color Party and volunteered to assist others at the Branch as often as he could. For many years he attended the Dauphin Festival selling Poppies for Remembrance Day. He participated in Legion Picnics and was on the Committee with youth and culture. In 1984 he received his life membership. He enjoyed working on Bingorama, and other functions when possible. The Color Party visited many senior homes. Michael was much loved and will be sadly missed by his wife Maria; two children, son Robert and daughter Joan (Fred) Mazepa and grandson Michael Mazepa. He also leaves to mourn his brother Steven (Loretta) of Niagara Falls, Ont.; sister Tina of Ont.; brother Alex of Winnipeg; sister Helen (Rudy) of St. Catherines, Ont.; sister-in-law Roseann; brothers-in-law, Michael and wife Emily and Wally and family all of Shoal Lake, Man; mother-in-law Natalia Peleshok as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother in 1953 and father in 1965 and brother-in-law Alex Peleshok in 1999. Prayers will be said on Thursday, March 9, at 7:00 p.m. at the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, 1175 Main St. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 10, at 9:30 a.m. also at the Cathedral with The Very Rev. Fr. Henry Lakusta officiating. Interment will follow in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be the Members of Ukrainian Legion 141. Color Party will be in attendance. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. R. Davey and staff, and St. Boniface Medicine staff and the group of nurses on 6A South Wing. Special thanks to staff of E5048. Donations may be made in Michaels memory to the Ukrainian Metropolitan Cathedral of Holy Trinity, 1175 Main St. Michael was a loving husband, father and grandfather "gigi".
