Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN BANMAN September 23, 1907 - March 4, 2000 Peacefully on March 4, 2000, John Banman passed away at the age of 92 years in the Morris Hospital. John was born September 23, 1907, one and one half miles south of Plum Coulee. Dad was a longtime resident of Plum Coulee and Winkler. He was a member of the Bergthaler Church in Winkler for many years and a resident of the Red River Valley Lodge in Morris since February 14, 2000. He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Anna Wiens, who he married in October, 1935. He was also predeceased by his second wife, Helen Warkentin, who he married in May, 1977, spending 18 years together. Dad was also predeceased by his eldest son John Percy, May, 1958; son-in-law Dennis Hartnell, November, 1969; grandson David Banman, September, 1993; and grandson-in-law Bruce Schellenberg, September, 1987. In his younger years dad worked as a newsy for the railway during the depression. He also worked in grocery stores in Plum Coulee. Later on he was a grain buyer for the Lake of the Woods Milling Company for 25 years. He travelled for Ogilvie as a protein inspector for another 12 years and took pride in evaluating cereal grain which he spoke of for many years. He was a past president of the Plum Coulee Chamber of Commerce and also served on the school board. He enjoyed playing baseball and later on he participated as an umpire. Dad was also a volunteer visiting retirees of Ogilvie. Dad was not a rich man in money but his wealth was his family. He led a full life with his family and many friends. He is survived by his children, Mary Anne (Nelson) Whitehead, Peter (Bev) Banman, Ruth Hartnell, Myrtle (Bill) Klein, all of Winnipeg and Dorothy (Gene) Hyshka, Saskatoon, SK, Doug (Kathy) Banman, Delta, BC, Kathy (Wayne) Jones, Paris, France and Dale (Donna) Banman, Killarney, MB. He also leaves 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 9 at the Bergthaler Mennonite Church in Winkler at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be held at Plum Coulee Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Childrens Wish Foundation of Canada (Manitoba Chapter), Lower Level, 350 St. Mary Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3C 3J2.
