DR. ISAAC SUTTON With great sorrow, the family of Dr. Isaac Sutton announce his passing on Tuesday, March 7, 2000 at the age of 93. Dr. Sutton, known as Poppa by his family, was predeceased by his wife Pat in 1983. He is survived by two daughters, Gail Foster of Winnipeg and Ann Tetrault of Trenton; five grandchildren, Cathy Black (Kelvin) of Beausejour, Joanne McDowell (Rod) of London, Nancy Drad (Brian) of Stonewall, Virginia Gantert of Comax and David Armstrong (Lorrie) of Edmonton and six great-grandchildren, Shaylynn, Spencer, Fraser, Kurtis, Joshua and Jordan. Poppa was born in Leads, England in 1906. At the age of two, his family made their way to Canada. Poppa attended Queens University, graduating from Medicine with a specialization in Psychiatry. While at Queens, he married his love, Pat. Poppa was active at Queens, becoming Captain of the Basketball team, Quarterback of the Football team and even goalie for a hockey team despite the fact he didnt know how to skate. He went on in his football career to quarterback the "Hamilton Tigers" to a Grey Cup win in 1932. In addition to his love of sports, Poppa always had a love for music and even played violin for a short while with the Hamilton Symphony Orchestra. Like many of our Canadian Grandfathers, Poppa was called to service in the Second World War in 1939 where he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in an Army Convalescent Hospital. After five years of distinguished service he returned home to his family in 1945. Returning to school Poppa obtained a degree in Hospital Administration, and became the Assistant Administrator of Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. In 1952, an opportunity became available in Winnipeg and Poppa moved the family to St. James where he served as Head Administrator of Deer Lodge (Veterans) Hospital until he retired in 1974. While at Deer Lodge, Poppa proudly represented Canadian War Veterans and the People of Winnipeg during many visits and tributes by celebrities, politicians and the Royal Family including Queen Elizabeth II. Of all our memories of Grandma and Poppa, the fondest come from their summer home "Tapeki" at Otter Falls in the Whiteshell. At this magical place, our family will always remember the fun had with each other and the many friends that came to share in the Sutton hospitality. Whether it was a quiet night playing Scrabble in front of the fireplace or one of the famous cocktail parties on the roof of the boat house, the stay there was sure to be memorable. All was made complete by Poppas keen wit and sense of humour. It was Poppas wish that no memorial service be held. We ask that you join us in celebrating his life and accomplishments by acknowledging a moment of silence on Friday, the 10th of March at twelve noon. Rest in Peace Poppa we love you. The family would like to extend our appreciation to the staff of 2 East at the Maples Personal Care Home for taking such good care of "Doc", and for the respect and friendship they extended him.
