ESTHER TERESA KIERNAN Peacefully on March 5, 2000, at the Tuxedo Villa Personal Care Home, our beloved sister-in-law and aunt. Esther lived a life of kindness and generosity to others which was truly exceptional. Born in rural Saskatchewan in 1921, she was educated at the University of Manitoba. She had a highly successful forty-year teaching career in Flin Flon and at Gordon Bell High School in Winnipeg, where she headed the English department and also taught Latin. Esther took special pride in her students achievements, and they remembered her fondly decades later. Although she loved her work, she took early retirement to care for her mother. Later, she travelled extensively in Ireland, Italy, Greece and Switzerland, making new friends wherever she went. A devoted longtime member of St. John Brebeuf church, she was also a patron of theatre and opera, a generous supporter of many charities, and a member of the University Womens Club. She was predeceased by her parents, Mary Anne and Patrick Kiernan, and her dear brother Dr. Matthew Kiernan. She is survived by her sister-in-law Anaid; nephew Matthew of Toronto, his wife Catherine, their children Susannah and Patrick, and numerous relatives in Chicago and Ireland. The family thanks the staff of Lions Manor and Tuxedo Villa, especially Aurora, Michelle, Susan, Lee-Ann, Irene and Nila. Esther will be cherished forever by everyone whose life she touched. There will be a Memorial Mass held at a later date in St. John Brebeuf Roman Catholic Church. Flowers are gratefully declined. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • My first contact with Miss Kiernan was one she taught me Latin in grade nine (1966-1967). I believe that was the last year Latin was taught at Gordon Bell. She was wonderful and kind teacher. When I was in grade 12 (1969-1970), she was my home room teacher as well as one of my English teachers. From 1965 to 1970, our school program was based on team teaching. She hosted our 1969-1970 home students at her apartment. She was a gracious host and made us all feel welcome. She encouraged us all to do all best. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Ken Pennell (Gordon Bell High School Studnt) on: Nov 25, 2023
