Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEDITH JOYCE McEWEN (nee MacKINNON) On Tuesday, March 14, 2000 at her residence, Edith Joyce McEwen of Winnipeg, widow of the late Lawrence McEwen, passed away at the age of 76 years. Joyce was born on August 17, 1923, the second daughter of John Percival and Gladys MacKinnon, at MacGregor, MB, where she was raised and attended high school. After graduation she enlisted with the Canadian Womens Army Corp, serving in Canada until the end of the Second World War. Her wartime service always remained a source of pride and satisfaction to her. After the war, she attended the University of Manitoba, graduating with a degree in Home Economics in 1949. She was then employed as a Home Economics County Agent in Minnesota before returning to MacGregor in 1951 to operate the insurance business after her fathers passing. In 1954, her adventurous spirit took her north to Frobisher Bay, where she taught Home Economics for several years before embarking on a world tour for a year and a half, travelling extensively in Australia and Asia. Upon returning to Canada she taught Home Economics in high schools in British Columbia, eventually settling in White Rock, BC. A few years after her retirement she returned to her native Manitoba to live in Winnipeg. While living in British Columbia, she married Lawrence McEwen, who predeceased her in 1990. Joyce was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion at White Rock and a devoted fan of the British Monarchy. In 1981 she visited England and donned her Legion uniform to camp overnight near St. Pauls Cathedral to obtain a good vantage point to watch the Royal Wedding procession. Predeceased by her sister Elsie Lynch and Elsies husband Mack, she is survived by her sisters, Katherine (Victor) Palmer and Beverley (Duncan) Lamb; her stepson Michael McEwen; her nieces, Sharon Buckley, Jennifer Lynch, Vicki Blackwood, Susan Lewis and Julie Halfdanson and her nephews, David and Eric Lynch and Terry Lamb and their families, whose activities and interests were very important to her. Joyce was a talented singer and sang in several choirs in her earlier years. She was known for her sense of humour and her continuing interest in current affairs. She was well-informed on national and international events, always with interesting information to share, and took a kindly interest in both the triumphs and the problems of her family and friends. Cremation has taken place and in accordance with Joyces wishes there will be no service. Omega Funeral Home is in care of arrangements.
