JOHN BERNARD SMITHEE Peacefully at home on March 15, 2000, John Bernard Smithee, 92 years, left us to join his beloved wife Isa, who passed away on February 27, 1989. He will be sadly missed by his loving family and friends. John is survived by his daughters, Sandra Suppes, Louisa and son-in-law Martin Newlands; grandchildren, Claire, Graeme, Iain and Stephen. John was born in Norfolk, England on November 3, 1907. In 1926 he enlisted in The Royal Artillery Regiment, where he served for many years in India and throughout Europe during the Second World War. After being wounded at Dunkirk, he was transferred to Scotland to recuperate. There he met and married his bride, Isa. After the war years, John was employed as a signalman with British Railway until his retirement in 1973. In 1977 they moved to Winnipeg to be with their family where they spent many happy years. John was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion No. 9 Branch. He was a very kind, gentle person who loved his family dearly. He will always be remembered for his thoughtfulness and patience. To celebrate Johns life, a funeral service will be held on Monday, March 20 at 1:00 p.m. in Grey Street United Church, Elmwood with the Rev. Gordon Fulford officiating. Interment to follow at St. Vital Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Spina Bifida Association or the Royal Canadian Legion, No. 9 Branch. "I love you papa".
