OTAKAR BENES Peacefully at his home on March 18, 2000 in Nanaimo, B.C. with his loving wife Elena and his constant companion Pretty at his side. Otto was born in Prague, February 25, 1939 and came to Canada where he met and married Elena. Otto became a very proud father of their two sons, Norman and Roman. Otto will also be lovingly remembered by his family in the former Czechoslovakia and deeply missed by his fellow countrymen now living in Canada and his extended family of friends of Northern Yacht Club. Otto was employed by Wardrop Eng. Inc. until, because of his declining health they decided to relocate to Nanaimo to enjoy a more temperate climate. Otto was dignified but witty and humourous, proud but not boastful, fiercely competitive but gentle and kind, a loving husband, a proud father and a loyal friend. He was an avid sportsman, excelling at basketball and volleyball, but his greatest love was sailing. His zeal for perfection was evident by his successful racing career and an unending willingness to share his skills with his fellow sailors. Otto and Elena shared a love of cruising and exploring all the beauty that the Lake of the Woods had to offer and he enjoyed his years of racing in L.O.W.I.S.A. with his family as crew. Otto requested that there be no service and that his ashes should be brought home to the Lake of the Woods. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation, 1200 Dufferin Cresc., Nanaimo, B.C., V9S 2B7. 250-755-7690. Otto looked for clear air, sailed his own race and didnt look back.
