DIANE RUTH SMITH (nee CHALMERS) Peacefully, on March 22, 2000, Diane, aged 65 years completed her journey. Diane was born on April 11, 1934 in Winnipeg, the only daughter of Frank and Alice Chalmers. Growing up in the North End, she enjoyed speed skating, playing the piano and singing. Diane was a very caring mother and was always more concerned about us, her children, than of herself. Even on her last day of life, we were blessed to receive and observe her abundant generosity. She was always ready to listen. Her home was your home, and its walls hold decades of love and acceptance. Mom loved animals and a lucky stray would eventually become the household pet if it crossed our doorstep. Known to some as the original Martha Stewart she always had several projects going on at the same time. Another passion of Dianes was gardening, especially growing lilies. When she wasnt gardening, she loved to sit by her garden or on her veranda in the sun and read mystery novels. Diane will be lovingly remembered by her children, Terry (Kristine), Derek, Karen (Roman) and her granddaughters, Brandis and Jade Smith; aunt Ruth and cousin Peter and family of Brentwood CA, as well as many cherished friends especially Bev Mudrey and Betty Moulden who were with Mom through the good times and the more difficult ones. We would like to thank Dr. Bowman, Pat and Cheryl along with all of the staff at CancerCare Manitoba (100 Olivia St) who cared for mom during her life with cancer. We would also like to thank all the staff at Riverview Health Center 3E, especially Diane, Sheila and Chris. Your kindness will always be remembered, and helped to make moms last days with us comfortable and dignified. We ask that those of us who were blessed to know her and receive her kindness will, in turn, show the same to others. This will ensure that she continues to live on. With respect to Dianes wishes, a Memorial Service will be held in Emerson, MB in June, 2000. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Humane Society, 5 Kent Road, or the charity of ones choice. Cropo Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements, 586-80444.
