GLADYS WILWAND With deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Gladys Wilwand, our dear mother, grandmother (Gram) and great-grandmother (G.G.) at the age of 87 years. Gladys will be sadly missed by her children, Barry (Laureen) of Kenora, Ont., Pat (Alex) Ross of Winnipeg and Peg (Jim) Brownie of Surrey, B.C.; seven grandchildren, Karen (Len) Terlinski, Shelley Raven, Michael (Michelle) Wilwand, DeeAnne, Lee and Josh Wilwand, Kim (Craig) Smith; and eleven great-grandchildren. She also leaves to mourn her brother John (Irene) Little. Gladys was predeceased by her husband William (Bill) in 1978; her brother Bill and his wife Louise Little of Bracebridge, Ont. Mom was born on June 24, 1912 to Lillian and William Little. As a young woman she worked at Eatons groceteria, where she met Bill, and they were married on September 2, 1933. They resided in St. James for most of their married life. In summer months, Moms favourite place was the family cottage at Keewatin, Ont., where every summer was spent. She loved to fish, boat, swim and go berry picking. Their cabin was the favourite gathering spot for Saturday night get-togethers with friends, and for daytime swim parties. She loved to have her grandchildren join her for holidays. The cabin was a favourite family retreat and holds many wonderful memories for all of us. Mom was a very creative lady who loved to knit, crochet, sew and craft. She loved to do her own decorating and enjoyed preparing her Sunday family dinners. She and Dad shared many wonderful holiday trips in Canada and in Hawaii. In 1977 they bought a lovely mobile home in Florida. Unfortunately, they only had one season to enjoy it before Dad became ill. In 1952 Mom was initiated into the Order of the Eastern Star. She held many offices in Mizpah Chapter #14, (later Queen Winnipeg #1) including two terms as Worthy Matron. As well, she held office in the Grand Chapter of Manitoba. Even when Mom had serious health problems, she met these challenges in her own quiet acceptance of lifes curves. She was a "spunky lady" and will be remembered by those who knew and loved her for her quick wit and optimistic outlook. Mom loved her grandchildren and always enjoyed their little antics. She was "best friends" to some, confidante to others, and was always there to comfort and console. Thanks Gram for our special time with you. Mom moved to Transcona and resided at St. Michaels Villa for four years. In 1997 she took up residence at Beacon Hill Lodge PCH, and was later transferred to River East PCH, where she remained until her passing. Special thanks to those staff members of River East PCH, Unit 1, who showed such compassion to Mom and family members during her final days. In respect of Moms wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at Bardals Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook St., on Tuesday, March 28 at 1:00 p.m. A private interment will take place at Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing to do so may show an expression of sympathy by making a donation to The Heart & Stroke Foundation, 949-2000, or The Canadian Cancer Society, 774-7483.
