LYDIA DOROTHY DEWBURY-VALAINIS (nee BERKIS) December 14, 1914 - March 31, 2000 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and great-aunt, Lydia Dorothy Valainis. She was predeceased by her husbands, Harry Allan Dewbury (1948) and Joseph Valainis (1994) parents, William and Zetta Berkis; sister Hilda; brothers, Nelson, Elmer, Rudolph, and Andrew. She is survived by her children, Linda Dewbury-Sloane, Thomas Dewbury (Calgary) and Kenneth Valainis (Valerie) her grandchildren, Thomas (Carol), Elaine (Ken), Patricia (Glenn), Robert, Jaret, Wade (all of Winnipeg), Craig (Maria), Corinna, Christopher and Catherine (all of Calgary) her great grandchildren, Johnathan, Zak, Rebecca, Steven and Madison; her brother Kenneth (Jocelyn) sisters, Helen, Loretta (Eugene) and Brenda (Warren) also many cousins, nieces and nephews. Lydia was born the eldest of nine children, on a homestead in the Oak Brae area of Manitoba. She later moved with her parents to Fork River, Man., where she grew up to later marry Al Dewbury where they operated a garage and cafe until moving to Winnipeg in the 40s where they ran a rooming house at 555 Broadway until Als death in 1948. She then moved to South Fort Rouge in 1949 and married Joseph Valainis in March 1952. She worked for Avon and Winnipeg Roller Rink until she obtained permanent employment with the Government of Canada (U.I.C) in 1965 until her retirement in 1979. She was an active member of the Rosedale United Church, Golden Seniors Club until she moved to Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts, 2300 Ness Ave. The focus of her life was her family and friends and her greatest joy was family gatherings. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff on 4 West Grace General Hospital. Your kindness and caring were immeasurable in making these difficult times easier. A memorial service will take place Tuesday April 4, at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. A gathering of family and friends will be held in the Chapel Lawn Reception Centre. Interment will be held on Wednesday April 5, at 1:30 p.m. in Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Grace Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Dr., R3J 3M7, The Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., R3C 2B7, or The Canadian Diabetes Association, 102-310 Broadway, R3C 0S6.
