GILBERT GEORGE STANNARD Peacefully on April 3, 2000 at the Grace Hospital in his 90th year, with his children and grandchildren by his side. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Leigh Arlene (Harry) of Victoria, Norman (Nancy) of Edmonton, Janice (Jon) of Winnipeg, and Glen (Lee) of Winnipeg; his 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his loving wife Madeline in 1962, leaving him to raise the youngest two of his four children on his own. Dad was born February 9, 1911, the eldest of eight boys born to Selina and Gilbert Stannard. He was predeceased by his brothers, Harry, Leonard, Vic, Norman, Leslie and Bob. His is survived by his brother Arthur, of California. Dad started work as a young man with Rogers Fruit and ended his career, 45 years later, with Western Grocers. Dad was well thought of and respected in the produce business in the era of the Mom & Pop corner grocery store. Dad always enjoyed his sports, following the baseball, the local football, hockey and curling events. He is a former member of the Deer Lodge Curling Club. Dads greatest love was his family, especially the children. He will be remembered for his gentle and caring ways. He loved to have a baby in his arms or a child on his lap. The family wishes to thank the staff and the residents of The Westhaven for all their kindness and support during the past 12 years of his residence and for the friendships made there. Funeral service will be held on Friday, April 7 at 1:00 p.m. in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1858 Portage Ave., with the Rev. Don McIntyre officiating. Interment to follow at Brookside Cemetery. Thank you to the emergency attendants, who gave us the opportunity to be with Dad, and the ICU nurses of Grace Hospital for their compassion. Thanks also to Dr. Lu for his care during the past year. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg, Man., R3B 2H8, in Dads memory would be gratefully appreciated.
