He will be deeply missed by his loving wife Jean; two sons, Garry (Louise) of Dugald, MB and Dale (Roberta) of Strathclair, MB; and four grandchildren, Cheryl, Chris, Lana, and Dane; two sisters, Margaret Beatty of Winnipeg and Olive McMurchy of Brandon. Don was predeceased by his son Denny; brothers, Lloyd, Harry and Allan; and sister Olga Kerney. He was born in Napinka, MB on June 29, 1914 to Arthur and Faith (Davey). As a young man Don worked on various farms in the area and travelled to the Peace River District in Alberta to help his brother Allan homestead. Don returned to Manitoba and was employed by the CPR on the B and B and then took the job as pumpman where he was stationed in the valley North of Newdale. In 1945 he married Jean Fleming of Crandall. Garry was born the following year and Dale a few years later. In 1954 he moved his family to the Town of Newdale where he purchased and ran the Poolroom and Barbershop in the evenings and worked for Manitoba Hydro during the day. When Don retired from Manitoba Hydro, he decided to convert the Poolroom and Barbershop into a carpenters haven. Many people in the area will remember Don for his handiwork and the many extensive renovations he undertook. He also was very talented in making lawn furniture and toys and would tackle any project big or small. He was an avid sportsman enjoying baseball, curling, golfing, fishing, hunting, and camping. Don and Jean spent many evenings square dancing, attending jamborees throughout the area. Don loved to see the countryside and they would drive many miles together looking for wildlife and just enjoying the scenery. His greatest joys were being with his family and friends, playing cards, fishing, golfing, and gardening. He was a wonderful man with a kind heart and a keen sense of humour. In respect of Dons wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 1 at the Newdale United Church, with Rev. Tom Delgaty officiating. Private interment at Crandall Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to Raes Funeral Service of Shoal Lake.
