LORANT FERENC KOCSIS M.D., L.M.C.C., C.C.F.P., F.C.F.P November 1, 1919 - April 8, 2000 On April 8, 2000, Dr. Lorant Ferenc Kocsis peacefully passed away in his 80th year at Riverview Health Centre, after a valiant struggle with cancer. Dr. Kocsis is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Henrietta; daughter Irene and her husband Daved Boldt; son Frederick; sister Eva and her husband Istvan Raffy; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Maria and Ferenc David (Hungary). He is predeceased by his parents, Irene and Ferenc and his brother Imre. Dr. Kocsis was born in Szollosgyorok, Hungary on November 1, 1919. As a young child, his one aspiration was to become a medical doctor to help treat the sick and poor. He realized his dream when he graduated with an MD diploma in 1943 from the Royal Hungarian Elizabeth University in Pecs, Hungary. In 1945, he married Henrietta Zsofia Hofmann and together they emigrated to England, after the Second World War, in 1948, where he completed his post-graduate studies at the West Middlesex Hospital in London. In 1952, they arrived in Canada and settled in Winnipeg, Man. He wrote his Licensed Medical Canadian (LMCC) examination in 1953 and practiced in Swan Lake, Man. until 1957. He returned to Winnipeg in 1957 and joined the Mall Medical Group. After eight years with the Group, he set up his own private medical practice in downtown Winnipeg. He retired at the age of 72 in 1991. Among his many professional accomplishments, Dr. Kocsis served with distinction as the President of the College of Family Physicians (Manitoba Branch) and Conservative Club of Winnipeg. He also served on many boards including the Canada Pension Plan Review Tribunal, Manitoba Blue Cross and Manitoba Medico-Legal Society. For more than a quarter-century, Dr. Kocsis was active staff at the Misericordia Hospital. While on staff, he volunteered his time and efforts on behalf of many hospital committees including: chairing the Medical Records Committee and serving as a member of the Review Committee of the Department of General Practice. In the early 1980s, he took great pride in being presented with the Knight of the Order of St. Laszlo in recognition of his many years of humanitarian service to the Hungarian community in Canada. During his long and active life, Dr. Kocsis was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Manitoba Game and Fish Association, Niakwa Golf and Country Club and the St. James Art Club. A conservationist at heart, he supported with conviction Duck Unlimited Canada for many years. A true Renaissance man, his many interests included: reading, gardening, oil painting, politics, history, coin and stamp collecting, fishing and hunting as well as collecting antiques. The family would like to express their sincerest thanks and appreciation to the many physicians and health care professionals who cared for Dr. Kocsis during his lengthy illness. Our thanks to the great staff at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre, Grace Hospital, Victoria General Hospital and Winnipeg Clinic. Also our great appreciation goes to Dr. Marr and the wonderful nursing staff at Riverview Health Centre, Palliative Care Ward for their exceptional and devoted care of Dr. Kocsis. All of us -- his family, friends, colleagues and former patients -- will cherish his memory forever. This dedicated physician who cared for so many is now resting in peace. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Canadian Cancer Society (Manitoba Chapter). A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. at Luxton Avenue. Father Gary Killen will be officiating.
