DONALD STOPLE Quietly, after living in three different centuries, Donald Stople passed away at his home on April 9, 2000 at the age of 101. Donald was predeceased by his wife Lydia; a daughter Val Mulder; brothers, Edwin and Jack; his sister Sarah; and stepbrother Henry. He leaves to mourn his passing and to cherish his memory his son Gerald (Jean) Stople; grandchildren, Kathy (Raymond), Tracy (Joe), Don (Janet), Barry (Sandy), Brenda (Barry) nine great-grandchildren; son-in-law Dick Mulder; sister-in-law Ede Squires; his companion "Tiger" and many other relatives and good friends. Donald was born on October 29, 1898 in Kora, Russia, the son of Julius and Pauline Stople. The family immigrated to Canada in 1900 and settled in Winnipeg. Donald attended "German" school at the Baptist Church on Elgin and Ellen. After completing grade 6, he began work at the Manitoba Club working as a Bell Hop. He later worked at the Consolidated Plate Works Co. where he learned his apprenticeship in the "Arts Glass Trade." At the age of 19 he joined the army and served overseas until 1918 when the First World War ended. After returning to Canada he was united in marriage with Lydia Drefz on August 27, 1922 in Pine Ridge, Manitoba. Over the years Donald worked for Brown & Rutherford, Taylors Glass as a Glaser, then with Shore Glass and finally with Selkirk Cabinets. He also worked on his own as a "Jack of all Trades." Donald enjoyed all sorts of sports - playing baseball, motorcycle racing, watching wrestling and in past years attending Winnipeg Jets hockey games with his grandson Don. His hobby was creating all sorts of concrete ornaments which people traveled from all over to purchase. The family would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to all Donalds caregivers for the special care and attention they gave over the years. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, a donation to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102 - 310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB. R3C 0S6 would be appreciated. A Visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, April 14, at 7:00 p.m. from Chapel Lawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 15, at 12:30 p.m. from Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. with Reverend Michael Boulger presiding. The Pallbearers are Raymond Gutsche, Bob Stoppel, Barry Mulder, Joe Romano, Don Mulder, and Barry Rosney. Interment and Reception to follow.
