BETTY STEWART It is with sadness that the family of Betty Stewart announces her peaceful passing on Wednesday, April 12, 2000 at Riverview Health Centre after a lengthy illness. Betty was born June 4, 1930 in St. Boniface to James and Gertrude Todd. She grew up in Winnipeg and attended St. Edwards School, General Wolfe, and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. Betty worked as a stenographer at Revenue Canada until shortly after her marriage. As a young adult, Betty enjoyed tap dancing. While participating in a CYO show at St. Marys she met her future husband. On June 2, 1956 she married James A. Stewart and they made their home in Transcona. Together they raised three children, Janice, Theresa (Terrie) and Kevin. Volunteerism was an important part of Bettys life. She had been an active member in her church of St. Joseph the Worker, including her involvement in the Catholic Womens League for several years. Betty had been a youth and adult member of the Girl Guides of Canada, holding a variety of positions including Captain of the 69th, 143rd, 144th Winnipeg Guide Companies, Transcona District Commissioner, Transcona Division Commissioner and Provincial Program and Awards Committee member. During her 45 years of adult service she received a Certificate of Merit and later an Honorary Life Membership (1988). Betty was instrumental in establishing the Transcona Guide-Scout Water Safety Program in 1967 and served as Secretary for numerous years. Betty also served as District Secretary for the Transcona-Springfield District, Boy Scouts of Canada. She was awarded a Certificate of Commendation in 1984 for her service. In 1992 Betty received a Canada 125 Medal for her community service. Betty enjoyed and was a very talented knitter, even Winnipeg prizes at various Transcona Horticultural Shows for her projects. Fortunately many family and friends have received gifts of her knitting which we can treasure for years to come. Predeceased by her father James Todd in 1993; her mother Gertrude in 1996, and her son-in-law Don Gothard on February 1, 2000. She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband of 43 years, Jim; daughters, Janice Gothard of Brandon, Terrie Stewart (Les Douglas) of Pigeon Lake, AB; son Kevin of Calgary, and grandchildren, Tyson Gothard, Daria and David Douglas. Prayers will be said on Sunday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Joseph the Worker Church, 505 Brewster St. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 17 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph the Worker Church with Rev. Fr. W. Rebillaco officiating. Cremation and interment will follow at a later date. Flowers gratefully declined and if so desired, donations may be made to the St. Boniface General Hospital Research Foundation, 409 Tache Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6, Riverview Health Centre Foundation, 1 Morley Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4 or a charity of choice.
