VINIA HOOGSTRATEN Vinia Hoogstraten died at home on Friday, April 21, 2000. She is survived by her husband Neil; her son William Neil of Calgary; her daughter Janis of Toronto and her sister Virginia Ridgway of Corpus Christi. Vinia was a well-known Winnipeg writer, a winner of the Womens Canadian Press Club Award for her covering of the 1950 Winnipeg flood. She was also known for her humorous writing which won her the Womens Canadian Club Award. She published in McCalls, Good Housekeeping, Macleans and Chatelaine. She also wrote and broadcast a number of scripts for the CBC. She was the President of the Winnipeg branch of the Canadian Authors Association and the national president from 1966-1968. She taught creative writing for the Creative Arts Week in Gimili for a number of years, encouraging the skills of many Manitoba writers. The family would particularly like to thank everyone at the Family Medical Centre for their care and understanding. A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 24 at 11:00 am in the Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
