CASSIE (KSENIA) HUTA (nee BUHAY) Passed away peacefully on April 21, 2000 at the Seven Oaks Hospital with family at her side after a short battle with cancer at age 71. She leaves to mourn her husband John of 48 years of marriage; daughter Sonya Effa (Vern) of Springside, SK and three grandchildren, Breanne, Scott and Darla and son Wesley of Winnipeg. She also leaves to mourn her brothers, Mike Buhay of Sandy Lake, Allan (Stella) of Winnipeg, Fred (Deni) of Craven, SK and George of Sandy Lake; her sisters, Mary Slashinsky (Metro) of Minnedosa, Jean Jawa (John) of Sandy Lake as well as many nieces and nephews. Her father, John Buhay, predeceased her in 1975; mother Annie in 1999 and infant sister Olga. Cassie was born on January 31, 1929 in Rackham, MB. At age 12, Cassie was stricken with polio, which left her very determined and eager to lead, a normal life. She married John Huta on August 9, 1951, moving to Russell, MB and living with Dad Huta for the remainder of that year. In May 1952 they purchased a restaurant in Kelwood, MB. After a fire in 1955, John and Cassie moved to Winnipeg, where they have resided since. On December 31, 1999 Cassie could no longer manage at home and was admitted to Seven Oaks Hospital. Cassie was an avid hobbyist making Ukrainian tablecloths for various churches as well as afghans, doilies, needlepoint pictures and Bunka. Saturday night cards were also very special to her, she was also an avid sports fan, especially Toronto Blue Jays, Blue Bombers, Phoenix Coyotes and Vikings. Cassie was a member of St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. She was employed at the Health Sciences Centre in the information desk for ten years. Many thanks to 5U3 and Dr. S. Koven of Seven Oaks Hospital for their compassion and kindness. As a family we are forever grateful. The family would also like to thank Fr. Michael Skrumeda, Brenda Arndt and also the hospital chaplain for their spiritual guidance and blessing. Thank you to all who had visited with Mom and the many acts of kindness of flowers and food. The family gratefully declines flowers but donations may be made in Cassies name to a charity of ones choice. Prayers with viewing one half hour prior will be held on Monday, April 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main St. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, April 25 at 10:00 a.m. also in the chapel at Glen Eden.
