Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFLORENCE M. SINGER (nee WHITNEY) November 29, 1908- April 21, 2000 Peacefully on Friday April 21, 2000, Florence Margaret Singer (nee Whitney) passed away at the Grace Hospital at the age of 91 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Roberta Ferguson (Robert Geswein) two grandsons, Robert Ferguson and Sam Ferguson (Susan) and great-grandson Calvin; Eileen Janzen and daughter Pat. She will also be remembered by her brothers, Lawrence Whitney and Harold Whitney (Amy), along with many special nieces and nephews. Florence was predeceased by her parents Sedate and Elizabeth Whitney and also her brothers, Wes, Jim and Roy. Florence was born in Winnipeg on November 29, 1908, and shortly moved with her parents to Eriksdale, within a farming community. She attended grade school and upon graduation began work in the local hotel until an opportunity came to work in Winnipeg at the Nurses Home (Health Sciences Centre) where she met and made lifelong friends. In 1939, after a long courtship, she married Bob Singer and they had their daughter Roberta. During the early years of their marriage, they lived in many locations including 1596 Roy Ave. Next to it, resided a couple of vacant garden lots which gave Florence and Bob the inspiration to build a house they could call their own. Over the next several years, the foundation and hand construction of 1600 Roy Ave. rose from the former garden to become affectionately known as the "Tar Paper Shack." Her family moved into their new house in the 1950s and it became her pride and joy where Florence lived for the following three decades. In 1987 Florence joined with the residents of Lions Manor at 320 Sherbrook St., residing there for 13 years. She enjoyed travelling extensively, visiting many locations including England, Alaska, California, The Maritimes and Las Vegas. Through all her trials and tribulations, Florence was lucky to have many good friends. Sheila Perkins and her son Mike Perkins (Gail) were more than friends and are Florences extended family. Kay Stem who has helped nurse, care and entertain Florence over the last 10 years predeceased her just days before her own death. We have many special thoughts that they are now both together playing bingo and cards. Thank you Sheila and Kay. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 25, at 10:30 a.m. from Green Acres Funeral Chapel, Hwy. #1 East at Green Acres Lane. Interment will take place in Green Acres Memorial Gardens and a lunch reception will follow the service. In memory of Florence, if friends so desire, donations may be made to Lions Manor Residents Council to maintain its programs for the residents of the Manor, attention: Elizabeth Millar, President, in care of Lions Manor, 320 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, Man., R3B 2W6.
