Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHUGH JOHN KNOWLTON Hugh John Knowlton, beloved husband of Betty Jean, passed away quietly at Fairview Personal Care Home after a long illness with Alzheimer Disease, on Saturday, April 22, 2000. His family was by his side. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, and three children, Catherine and her husband David Gallacher of Dallas, Texas, Bruce and his wife Margaret of Vancouver, BC and Joanna Knowlton and her husband Jim Tokarchuk of Winnipeg. There are two grandchildren, Brooke Knowlton of Vancouver and David Tokarchuk of Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his grandson, Bruce Knowlton of Vancouver in 1994. Hugh was born in Brandon on November 20, 1921 to Edna and Bruce Knowlton who predeceased him in 1963 and 1972. He was educated in Brandon schools and received a Bachelor of Arts from Brandon College in 1943, followed by a Master of Arts degree in Science from the University of Toronto in 1945. Shortly thereafter, he and Betty were married and in 1946 he returned to Brandon to join his father in the family shoe business. During his business life in Brandon he served his community through participation in many organizations such as the Brandon Kiwanis Club, the Board of Brandon College and the Board of the Brandon General Hospital. In 1976 he and Betty moved to Victoria, BC where he pursued his lifelong dream of boating on the West Coast. He spent 78 of his 79 summers at his family cottage at Clear Lake, one of the great joys of his life. Hugh cherished many friendships, and enjoyed the exercise of an intelligent debate. He was a kind and generous father and a loving and caring husband. The family wishes to thank all the nurses and members of the staff on the 5th Floor at Fairview for their loving care and concern. A private family graveside service will be followed by a memorial service at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, Brandon, on Tuesday, April 25 at 3:00 p.m. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Brandon General Hospital Foundation, 150 McTavish Ave., E., Brandon, MB R7A 2B3.
