EVERED LAWRENCE Evered died peacefully on April 21, 2000, at Oakview Place, Winnipeg. He is survived by his loving family: Alice, his wife of 58 years; daughters, Leslie Wilson (Don) and Linda Pettit (Rob) grandchildren, Glen (Renee), Keith (Tina) and Heather Wilson and James and Roberta Pettit; great-grandchildren, Drew, Alexandra and Tyler Wilson; and sister Margaret Kittson. He was predeceased by his brother, Gordon. Evered was born on the family farm at Lilyfield, Manitoba on July 25, 1911. When he and Alice married, they established their own farm, also at Lilyfield, where they lived until 1995. Ev grew registered seed grain and became an Elite seed grower. He took over his fathers agency for Portage La Prairie Mutual Insurance Company in 1935, and operated it until 1991. Evered gave generously of himself to make his community a better place. From 1949 to 1974 he was councillor and then reeve of the Rural Municipality of Rosser, and served on many municipal organizations, including the Union of Manitoba Municipalities and the Mayors and Reeves Association of Greater Winnipeg. He was a dedicated member of the Red Cross disaster team during the great Winnipeg flood of 1950. He served on the South Interlake Library Board, the Manitoba Public Schools Finance Board and the Manitoba Flood Assistance Board, and was a lay member of the Manitoba Law Society. He chaired the Agricultural Councils for Manitoba and sat on the provincial Agricultural Advisory Board and the South Interlake and Interlake Regional Development Boards. While Ev enjoyed sports, bridge, and music, his chief hobby was growing gladiolas. This was the source of many lasting friendships, and involved serving as chairman of the Winnipeg Gladiolus Society and the Canadian Gladiolus Society and vice-chairman of the North American Gladiolus Council. Evered always had a positive outlook and a sense of humour. He was a man of dignity and integrity, and had great respect for other people and for nature. His love for his family was deep and unconditional. Special thanks to the staff at Oakview Place for their kind and loving care these last four years. A memorial service to celebrate a life joyfully lived will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 29 at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway, Winnipeg, with a reception to follow. Although Ev loved flowers, friends who wish to do something in his memory are asked to make a donation instead to the Canadian Red Cross Society. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
