ALLAN R. McPHERSON Peacefully on April 23, 2000 in Kelowna, B.c. where he had lived since December 1998. Predeceased by his wife Margaret and by his daughter Wendy McPherson, he is survived by his daughter Heather McFarland of Spokane, WA. and his son Scott and his wife Valerie of Kelowna, B.C. He leaves four grandchildren, Stacey and Sherri McFarland and Cameron and Samantha McPherson. Born in Winnipeg on May 1, 1914, Allan was educated in Winnipeg public schools and graduated from the University of Manitoba where he was active in student government as a member of the Manitoba Students Union, President of the Arts Faculty Student Council and subsequently a Director of the University Alumni Association. After a few years in the Winnipeg Grain Exchange, he joined Strong-Scott Limited, a company engaged in the manufacture of heavy machinery and eventually became owner and President of that firm until retirement in 1974. Allan also served as a director of a number of other local and national companies. He had many community interests and had served lengthy periods as a Trustee of Lakeside Fresh Air Camp and the United Way of Greater Winnipeg. He was also a Trustee and Chairman of the Victoria General Hospital, later extending this interest as a Director of the hospitals Research and Services Fund. His concerns for the business environment in Winnipeg and in the Province led to his involvement with a number of organizations and he had been a member of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and on the Executive Council of the Canadian Manufacturers Association. He was a past President of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce and past Chairman of the Manitoba branch of the Canadian Manufacturers Association. For some years he was a Director and member of the Executive committee of the Manitoba Development Fund and had lengthy service as a member of the Manitoba Labour Board and on the Board of Referees of the Unemployment Insurance Commission. Allan was a staunch supporter of continuing business education and he served for almost ten years on the Board of Directors of the Banff School of Advanced Management. A long time member of the Manitoba Club and of Delta Upsilon Fraternity, he was also affiliated with St. Andrews River Heights United Church. Allan greatly enjoyed travel and fishing and always looked forward to visits from his family and friends at the McPherson summer home on Lake Winnipeg. Cremation has taken place and a small family service will be held in Winnipeg at a later date. While flowers are gratefully declined, contributions to your local Heart and Stroke Association would be appreciated.
