JEAN KATHERINE WALLACE (nee WARD) It is with deep sadness the family announces the sudden passing of their beloved mother and grandmother, Jean Katherine Wallace, at her residence, Oddfellows Towers, Portage la Prairie, MB on Wednesday, May 3, 2000 at the age of 87 years. Jean as predeceased by her first husband Shirley Alliston in 1935; beloved husband Edward "Ted" Wallace in 1975; parents, Thomas and Jessie Ward; one sister Lorna Rintoul; four brothers, Earl, Harvey, Norman and Murray Ward; and by her mother and father-in-law, Bill and Margaret Ann Wallace. Jean will be forever remembered and sadly missed by her family, son Jim and daughter-in-law Diann of Winnipeg with grandsons, David of Winnipeg and Mark of Gimli; son Ward and daughter-in-law Sue of Pinawa, MB with grandchildren, Wade and Wendy, both of Calgary, AB; brother Phil Ward of Regina; sister-in-law Eileen Ward of Winnipeg; brother-in-law Blake (Evelyn) Wallace of Portage; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Jean was born April 10, 1913 at Portage la Prairie, and grew up surrounded by the love of her mother, father, sister, brothers and many friends. On July 14, 1940 she married Ted Wallace and together started their married life in Eastern Canada. When Ted was called to serve overseas, Jean returned home to Portage la Prairie to be near her family, give birth to their son Jamie and await Teds return. After Teds return, Ward was born and the family lived at Macdonald. In 1952 they moved to Churchill where Jean was very active in Legion activities, bowling and darts. In 1961, Jean and Ted moved from Churchill, living in Saskatchewan and Portage until 1966 when they returned to Churchill, as a result of the "call of the North". While in Churchill Jean enjoyed going out to watch the polar bears and she watched every documentary on polar bears. She was thrilled when one was adopted in her name. Ted retired in 1974, moving to Mission, BC. After Teds passing in 1975, Jean remained at Mission, a place where she made many friends, enjoyed the mountain scenery and lack of cold weather. Throughout her life, Jeans greatest joy was her family and then friends, while playing cards, darts, bowling and travelling on bus tours and cruises, exploring far away places like Australia and New Zealand. The trip that gave Jean the most pleasure, was the trip when she took her family to Hawaii at Christmas. In 1991, Jean moved back to Portage la Prairie, to be near her family and childhood friends, Eva Montgomery and Vera Sherritt. She kept active playing cards at the Herman prior Centre, driving her scooter around town and enjoying the peace and wildlife at Island Park. She also was a sports enthusiast, loving to watch the Blue Jays baseball on T.V. and often mentioned that she couldnt miss watching a game, as this could cause the Jays to lose. She amazed her family by knowing all the players and their stats. Mom had a generous heart, enjoyed her life and was always there to help her "boys" and their families. She was very proud of her grandchildren and loved to have their pictures displayed in her home. A private interment has taken place at the family plot at Hillside Cemetery, Portage la Prairie. A service to celebrate Jeans life will be conducted by Rev. Julie Baker from Trinity United Church, 15 Tupper Street, S., Portage la Prairie on Monday, May 8 at 2:00 p.m. The family would like to thank Jeans home care workers for their kindness, her family doctor for his excellent care and all her neighbours, who were so quick to lend a helping hand and drop in for a visit. As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Jeans memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Portage la Prairie Office, care of Catherine Newham, 103 Wilkinson Cres., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1A7 or to the Central Plains Cancer Care Services, 318 Saskatchewan Ave., E., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Jean at Evergreen Memorial Gardens by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are entrusted with the arrangements; 857-4021.
