JOHN SMITH 1919-2000 Following a long and courageous battle with cancer, it is with deepest sorrow we announce the passing of our beloved husband, dad, grandpa and brother, John Smith, age 80 years, on Thursday, May 4, 2000 at the St. Boniface General Hospital. John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 46 years, Frances Smith. He will be sadly missed by his daughters, Audrey (Dale) Weiss, Jenett (Marvin) Richter; and four grandchildren, Kyle, Andrew, Nicole and David. Also left to cherish his memory are brother Edward and wife Evelyn Smith; his sister Margaret and husband Oliver Dilling; and many nieces, nephews and a host of dear friends. John was predeceased by his mother Rose Smith in 1954, his father Steve Smith in 1966, his sister Emma Phipps in 1994, brother Alfred Smith and nephew Gerry (Gerald) Smith in 1999. John was born on November 18, 1919, in the Springhill District of rural Manitoba. He married Frances Harris (Wabick) in 1953 and farmed with his parents and in-laws until 1965, at which time his family moved to Winnipeg. John was then employed by Eatons as a fireman until his retirement at age 64 in 1984. John enjoyed many evenings playing cribbage and cards with family, friends and neighbours. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and his home was always welcome to company. Respecting his wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 9 at 11:00 a.m. in Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Rd., Winnipeg, with The Rev. Dr. Gordon Taylor officiating. Urn placement will then occur at 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Eternal Memories Mausoleum, 1501 Waverley St. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the special care given to John by Dr. Crow and the wonderful and compassionate team of health care professionals in 3E Palliative Care Unit at St. Boniface Hospital. We appreciate the ongoing emotional support and understanding during this very difficult time. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends desire, donations may be made to St. Boniface Hospital Research Foundation, Palliative Care, 409 Tache Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6 or CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 100 Olivia St., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or a charity of ones choice. Dear Dad, In tears we saw you fade away, You suffered much in silence, And fought so hard to stay, You faced your task with courage, Your spirit did not bend Still you kept on fighting Until the very end. God saw you getting tired, When a cure was not to be He put His arms around you And whispered "Come to Me" When we saw you sleeping So peaceful, free from pain, We could not wish you back To suffer that again.
