Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN LESLIE (LES) SMITH Les passed away, peacefully, on Thursday, May 4, 2000 at Victoria General Hospital. He was born on September 26, 1907 in Yorkshire, England, coming to Canada as a young child. The family homesteaded in Sprague, MB, later settling in Transcona. Les worked in various accounting and administrative positions relating to the Grain Exchange and the grocery business, eventually attaining a position as a court reporter with the Department of Justice, Province of Manitoba. Les was a long time member of Christ Church (Anglican), serving in many different capacities, including the annual Plant Sale, where he was affectionately known as the "Cardinal". Les was a member of Alpha Lodge 92, Independent Order of Oddfellows. Predeceased by his wife, Florence Lily in 1997, Les is survived by his daughter Beverley; son Barry (Heather) grandchildren, Lesley Ouimet (Raymond), Douglas Smith (Stephanie), and Robyn de Repentigny (Emile) great-grandchildren, Andrew and Laura Ouimet, and Liam Smith. The family extends grateful thanks to the staff at Victoria General Hospital, for their compassionate care and concern for Les during his final days. Special thanks to Dr. Eva Smil for her care over the years. Cremation has taken place and there will be a celebration of Les life on Tuesday, May 16, at 1:00 p.m. at Christ Church (Anglican), 1735 Corydon Ave., Winnipeg, MB, with Rev. Murray Still officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or Christ Church Memorial Fund.
