ROBERT WILLIAM (BOB) ASHLEY, Ph.D. Peacefully in Pembroke General Hospital, Pembroke, ON on May 5, 2000, in his 81st year. Born in Winnipeg, MB, Bob attended the University of Manitoba, McGill in Montreal and the University of Rochester where he obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry. A longtime resident of Deep River, ON, and employee of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, he retired as Director of the General Chemistry branch in Chalk River, ON in 1978. In addition to a distinguished research career, he was also a well-known sportsman. Bob was an outstanding athlete all his life, and a star rugby, soccer, tennis and basketball player while in college. In Deep River he was known as a champion golfer, curler and bowler and was a founder and past-president of the Deep River Golf Club. Bob is survived by daughter Jane and her husband Ron Willard of Aurora; and son Robert and wife Susan of Toronto. Predeceased by wife Brenda and son Peter, and by sister Laura Ashley. Also survived by sister Margaret Ashley of Winnipeg. fondly remembered by grandchildren, Charlotte, Lauren, Camille and Gordon Ashley. Cremation. A private family interment ceremony will be held at a later date in Deep River. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Red Cross Society, Renfrew County Branch, 1217 Pembroke St., E., Pembroke, ON (613) 735-1157.
