MARY COBB (PALMER) With courage and dignity, our wonderful Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, peacefully passed away on Mothers Day, May 14, 2000 at Concordia Hospital. Mom was born in Glasgow, Scotland on April 19, 1920 and came to Canada as a War Bride in June 1945. Her desire to give of herself to so many people during her lifetime will always be remembered. Mom was a very independent individual, raised two small children all alone, and yet she was always willing to share her home with others. Mom was a founding member of the British Wives Club and involved for over 45 years. As War Brides from overseas, they met together to support each other as well as others in need in the community. As an active member of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire for many years, much of her time and energy was spent working towards the goals of the I.O.D.E. Mom worked for over 16 summers as a Mothers Director for under privileged children and single parents, at the United Fresh Air Camp in Gimli. She became a Nurses Aide and worked with seniors at both Central Park Lodge locations for 13 years. Then, she worked as a caring group-home worker with children and teens at Childrens Aid for 12 years, retiring at the age of 65. Left to cherish her memory, is her daughter Maureen McBride, her husband David, their children, Stephen and Ryan; her son, Bill Cobb, his children, Debbie, Jamie and Robin (husband Randy Slocombe and great-granddaughter Lindsay). Mom was very proud of all her grandchildren and their accomplishments. Predeceased by her parents, sister Rose and brother Bill. Mom is also survived by her sister Jean Martin, many nieces and nephews, many dear friends she made and worked with over the years and her dearest friend Cathy Cuddy (who was always there for her). Her love for Scottish music nurtured joyful memories of Scotland as did her several journeys back home with her friend Betty Watson. According to Moms wishes, cremation has taken place. Her ashes will be taken to her beloved homeland, Scotland, where she always wanted to be. Friends and family are invited to join in a celebration of Marys life on Wednesday, May 24 at 1:30 p.m. at John Black Memorial United Church, on Henderson Hwy. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Home Care nurses for their kindness and care over the years; to the staff at Donwood Manor; to the nursing staff of Concordia Hospital for their caring support to Mom during her brief stay. A special thanks to all our friends, who supported us through this difficult time. "WHEN THE BODY BECOMES WEAK AND TIRED THE SPIRIT BECOMES STRONG" We believe Moms spirit is soaring above, watching over everyone she loved dearly. We will all miss you Mom and will cherish your memory and unconditional love forever! We know you are at peace and your spirit will be with us always. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her loving memory to the Kidney Foundation, Manitoba.
