ELIZABETH PRICILLA BARNSON 1897 - 2000 Peacefully on May 16, 2000, Elizabeth Barnson, passed away at Red River Place, Selkirk at the age of 103 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her family: her daughter, Betty Hart (Colin) son, Gordon Barnson (Lorraine) five grandchildren, Ronda, Dianne, Sheila, Paul, Jim; five great-grandchildren, Colin, Shara, Neil, Carl, Eric; and two great-great-grandchildren, Tristen and Ryder. She was predeceased by her son Arthur, RCAF, in 1943, and by her husband Paul, in 1980. Elizabeth was born in Harrow, England on April 10, in 1897. During the First World War, Elizabeth served in Britains Womens Auxiliary Army working in the military hospital in Folkstone, England. There she met Paul Barnson, the man who was to become her husband, when he was serving overseas as a military policeman with the Royal Canadian Army. Elizabeth came to Canada in 1921 to visit friends she had made during the First World War. She and Paul met again in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and were married on October 31, 1921. Returning to Manitoba, they farmed briefly in Ericsdale, in the Interlake. Elizabeth and Paul then moved to Pauls hometown, Selkirk, Manitoba to raise their family. Elizabeth worked for many years as a telephone receptionist at the Selkirk Mental Hospital. She was a past president of the Selkirk United Church Ladies Aid, and served in the Church in many capacities. A wonderful mother who loved her family, Elizabeth had a wealth of friends and loved to entertain. She made all who visited feel welcome and special. Funeral services will be held in Gilbarts Funeral Chapel, Selkirk on Friday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Barb Jones officiating. Interment will follow in St. Clements Cemetery, Mapleton. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the nursing staff at Red River Place for all the care and kindness given to Elizabeth during her stay. If friends so desire, donations can be made to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind or the Selkirk United Church. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.
