DONALD OAKDEN LESLIE Dons family announces with sadness the peaceful passing on, May 20, 2000 of a man of kind and gentle nature, with a tremendous sense of humour, whose endless desire to help others will never be forgotten. Born September l6, l922 in Winnipeg, Don moved at age 2 1/2 to Kerrisdale, Vancouver where he attended school. He joined the Bay in 194l and enlisted in the R.C.A.F. in 1942, flying overseas with the 425 Alouette Squadron. Don and Pearl were married on September 28, 1945 and made their first home in Vancouver. Don spent almost 44 years with the Bay in the Sporting Goods Department in Vancouver, Edmonton and Winnipeg stores in sales and management. Don was very proud of his Scottish heritage and was an active member of the St. Andrews Society since l974. He loved the game of golf, and was a member of the Assiniboine Golf Course for 35 years. Don was a devoted member of St. Andrews River Heights United Church where he spent numerous hours volunteering his time. Don was predeceased by his parents, his sister-in-law Mae Leslie and his youngest son James David (1977). Don is survived by his loving wife and life long friend Pearl; three daughters, Margaret (Frank) Carr, Dawn (Charles) Sherbo, Joan (Bob) Thomson; six sons, Wayne (Barb), John (Lesley), Roy (Linda), Ken (Sharon), Shawn (Cindy), Robin (Debra Ann) his eighteen grandchildren, Allison, Jennifer, Stephanie, Andrea, Ehren, Sarah, Beth, Giana, Oliver, Celia, Cleo, Jordan, Jack, Caelan, Quinn, Brody, Charlie and Riley; his older brothers, Jack and Roy (Pat) Leslie; sister-in-law Ann Devine and his dog Mitzi. Dad (poppa) was very proud of the accomplishments of all his children and grandchildren. His family gave him his greatest joy in life. Special thanks to Rev. Terry Hidichuk, the staff at the Health Sciences Centre, the St. Boniface Cancer Care Unit and especially to the Palliative Care Unit. The doctors and nurses worked with extreme dedication and provided compassionate care. We have appreciated the love, prayers, and visits from all our family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 25 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Andrews River Heights United Church. You lived your life for those you loved, and those you loved remember.
