MARY KAWAKAMI With great courage and dignity and with her loving family by her side, our dear Mom and Bachan passed away May 23, 2000 at the Grace General Hospital. She leaves to mourn her sons, Ken, Davy (Mayumi) grandchildren, Jason, Tracey, and Brian and great-grandchildren, Mikayla and Dakota; two brothers, Fred (Edna) and Rick (Marge) and their families and many nieces and nephews in Alberta. Mary was predeceased by her father Sukeichi, August 11, 1967; mother Kameyo, April 7, 1969 and her only sister Sonoye Fujikawa, September 11, 1961. Mom was born April 10, 1921 in Pitt Meadows, B.C. to Sukeichi and Kameyo Kaita. She married Kiyomi Kawakami in B.C. in 1941 and evacuated to Dufrost, MB in the spring of 1942 moving to Morris, MB and then to Geraldton , ON in 1943. Together with their two sons, they moved to Hiroshima, Japan in 1946. Mom and the boys returned to Canada in 1957 but due to circumstances, her husband was unable to make the move with them. Upon her return to Manitoba, she settled in Winnipeg and went to work to support her family at Oakland Hatcheries, Deer Lodge Hospital and Grace Hospital until her retirement in 1986. Mom loved gardening and her flowers were her pride and joy. Also her family meant everything to her especially her two great-granddaughters.
