WILLIAM (BILL) FREDERICK SMITH
Date of Passing: May 22, 2000
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILLIAM (BILL) FREDERICK SMITH With deep sadness, the family announces the passing of William (Bill) Smith on Monday, May 22, 2000. Bill is remembered with great love and affection by Irene, his wife of 51 years; his sons, Barton (Joy) and Douglas (Peggy) and his grandchildren, Janet, Natasha, Jenna, Alexandra and Hilary. Bill is also survived by great-granddaughter Katelyn, and will be sadly missed by extended family and friends. Like many others of his generation, Bill responded to the need of his country, serving four years overseas with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Following retirement from the Unemployment Insurance Commission in 1980, Bill enthusiastically pursued his interests in curling, golfing, travel and volunteer work for the City of Winnipeg Parks and Recreation Department. Bill maintained active membership for many years in the Pembina Old Timers Golf and Curling Club and Canadian Legion No. 90. Bill and Irene were particularly fortunate over the years to enjoy many winter holidays in Hawaii and Florida in the company of close friends. Dad was a gentleman who conducted his life with dignity and humility. A ready smile and friendly word of greeting were always offered to those who crossed his path. Though plagued by illness in recent years, Dad nevertheless, and quite remarkably, maintained his cheery disposition and concern for others. His devotion to his grandchildren was boundless; his support, assistance, and love never wavered. Grandpa was always there for the girls and will be remembered in their hearts forever. Dad was a tower of strength for our family, always available and ready to respond to any request for help or advice. We will miss you dearly. Your memory will endure through the love and respect of family and friends. A memorial service will take place on Friday, May 26 at 11:00 a.m. in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1501 Waverley Street. The family extends special thanks for the kind care provided by the 5th floor staff at Victoria General Hospital. In lieu of flowers, if friends so wish, donations in Bills memory may be made to the Victoria General Hospital, 2340 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 2E8.
