Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryROBERT L. JONSSON Peacefully, at home in Victoria Beach on May 24, 2000, Robert Jonsson passed away at the age of 74. His memory is cherished by his loving wife Donna; children, Brenda Coke (David), J.R. (Kathleen) and Joni Scherdell (Ken), and eight grandchildren. He is also lovingly remembered by his brothers and sisters, Lloyd (Gloria), Enid Tyler, Jack (Joanne) and Marlene Farrell (Tom) his nieces; nephews and many other relatives and friends. Robert was predeceased by his father John Axel, in 1963 and his mother Freda on May 3, 2000. Robert was born on July 28, 1925 in his parents home at Victoria Beach, MB. In 1944, at the age of 19, he joined the R.C.A.F. and served in the Canadian Infantry Corps from 1945-46. While working for a relative in Ontario, Robert met the young woman who would one day become his bride, Donna Breadner of Meaford. Robert joined the R.C.M.P. in 1948 and throughout his career was stationed in Edmonton, Jasper, Vermillion and Wetaskiwin in AB and Vancouver, Dawson Creek and Lumby in BC. In 1967, Robert moved his young family home to Victoria Beach where he spent 21 years as the municipal Police Chief, also assuming the positions of Municipal Supervisor, Building Inspector, Animal Control Officer and Chief of the Volunteer Fire Department. He held a fall commercial fishing license for 25 years, and loved being out on the lake he had grown up on. He was a proud and devoted dad, and never tired of giving of himself to his family. His role as Grampa was precious to him, as well. His grandchildren remember blueberry expeditions, John Deere tractor rides, bedtime tales of Chipper and Squirrely and choosing their summer bikes from Grampas collection. He had a gift of music and couldnt pass a piano without sitting down to play a few old favourites. Family and friends will remember his subtle sense of humour, his ready smile, his love of gardening, bird-watching and the pleasure he found puttering around in his garage and bicycle shop. Over the years, Robert enjoyed volunteering in the community. An active member of the Victoria Beach Sports Club, he served on the executive and was instrumental in the expansion of club facilities and the installation of artificial ice in the early 1970s. For many years he was an avid curler and snowmobile enthusiast. In the years since his retirement, Robert and Donna took pleasure in planning frequent trips to visit family and friends across Canada and the U.S. and particularly enjoyed travelling to Australia and Hawaii. A service celebrating his life will be held Monday, May 29 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Michaels Community Church, Victoria Beach, with viewing one hour prior to the service. Pastor Lorne Pearson of Eastview Community Church presiding. Arrangements by Gilbart Funeral Chapels in Selkirk (204) 482-3271.
