ELTON HAYWARD Peacefully with family at his side after a brief battle with cancer, Elton Hayward passed away at the Assiniboine Centre on Friday, May 26, 2000 at the age of 71. A long time resident of Brandon, Elton was born in Pilot Mound, Man., October 23, 1928. The oldest child of Wilbert and Lillian (nee Vanderburgh) Hayward, he spent his early years on the family farm north of Pilot Mound. Elton enjoyed playing baseball as a youth and continued a lifelong interest in sports. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, curler, gardener and carpenter. One of Eltons greatest pastimes was playing cards. Contract bridge and cribbage were two games that gave him many hours of pleasure. Elton continued playing cards with family and friends until his recent illness. Elton studied Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba, after which he joined the Manitoba Department of Good Roads. He had a long and enjoyable career with this organization where he made many life long friends. Elton had great pride in the highways he was involved in designing, building and maintaining. He was especially proud of his role in the construction of Provincial Trunk Highway 34. During his lifetime, Elton acquired a large extended family of friends, colleagues and neighbours. He valued all of the friendships he developed over the years and he could always be counted on to be there when anybody needed help or companionship. Elton was also a member of Central United Church for many years. The greatest love of Eltons life was his family. With a kind and gentle spirit he passed onto his family his strong personal values and work ethic. He is survived by his wife of 49 years Doreen (nee Orr) son Terry and wife Donna (Habing) and grandsons, Tim and Richard of Winnipeg, Beausejour and Ottawa; son Mike and wife Sherry (Seitz) and granddaughters, Lana and Maegan of Beausejour; son Bill and wife Joan (Jenkins) of Calgary; daughter Tracy and husband Lorne McCamis of Glenlea. Also surviving are brother Raymond of Pilot Mound; brother Ron and wife Lucille of Elm Creek; brother-in-law Fred Weselowski of Pilot Mound; sister-in-law Connie Foster and husband Dick of Transcona and sister-in-law Toni Hayward of Pilot Mound; his aunt and uncle Thelma and Marve Bourque of Pilot Mound and uncle and aunt Chelsea and Jean Vanderburgh of Man., uncle Bill Gibbs of Didsbury, Alta., cousins, Elgin Hayward and wife Ivy, Gordie Hayward, Anne Brown (Vanderburgh) and husband Ted, June Wall (Vanderburgh), David Vanderburgh and wife Linda, Ken Bourque and wife Marcie, Wilma Kock (Gibbs) and Shirley McDonald (Gibbs) plus many nieces and nephews. Elton will also be fondly remembered by Doreens family, aunt Helen Tole; sisters-in-law, Joyce and Ken Hewitt, Edith and Ken McKay, Helen Gardiner, Ruth and Cary Flack and brothers-in-law, Bill and Carol Orr and Wayne and Linda Orr and their families from across Canada. Elton was predeceased by his parents; infant sister Lillian Jean; teenage brother Clair; brother Edgar; brother Lloyd and sister Edith Weselowski. Cremation has occurred as per Eltons wishes. Services to celebrate his life will be held 2:00 p.m. May 30 at Central United Church, Brandon, Man. and 2:00 p.m. May 31 at Pilot Mound United Church, Pilot Mound, Man. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made in Eltons memory to the Sun Fund for Kids, in care of Brandon Sun, 501 Rosser Ave., Brandon R7A 0K4 or Westman Dreams for Kids Foundation, 1435 Princess Ave., Brandon R7A 0R6. His joy of Children was boundless. Arrangements have been entrusted to Grahams Funeral Home in Pilot Mound.
