JOSE CARLOS LOPES FRIAS It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jose Carlos Lopes Frias on Friday, June 2, 2000 at the Health Sciences Centre at the age of 25. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side after a courageous battle with leukemia. He will be lovingly remembered in the hearts of his father and mother, Jose and Ermelinda, and his sister Ana Cristina. Carlos was born in Winnipeg on December 8, 1974. It was with great courage and strength that he pursued his dream of working in the field of Forensics, with his graduation from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Science, Honours, in Genetics and his near completion of a Masters in Forensic Sciences at the University of Illinois. Carlos was to complete his thesis by August 2000 and was seeking employment in New York, Toronto, Mississipi, etc. Carlos will always be remembered for his dedication and motivation for his work, his laughter and sense of humour, his love for music and martial arts, his spirituality, and his devotion to his family and friends. During his undergraduate degree Carlos worked at the Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation as part of his curriculum. During his stay in Chicago, Carlos participated in many conferences and contributed much to fellow colleagues and his field of work. Carloss interest in singing during his high school years led to his decision to take voice lessons for an additional five years, singing in the festivals, and eventually acquiring a bursary from the DuVal Foundation to sing with the Knox Church Choir. His other interests included traveling, outdoor sports, camping and singing while driving(and hoping that no one sees him doing it!). Carlos will be remembered by his extensive family in Canada, Portugal, France, Brazil, the United States, and Belgium. His memory will also be cherished by his other family friends, special neighbours the Delgado family and all his many friends, particularly Tony, Salvatore, Enzo, Simon, Kam, Tonino, Bruno, and all the rest of the guys, his friends, professors, doctors and colleagues from Chicago and the original Portuguese dance group Alegria whom he danced with. Prayers will be said on Tuesday, June 6, at 8:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 181 Austin Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 7, at 10:00 a.m. also at Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. Fr. Jose Medeiros officiating. Service will conclude in the Church and his interment will follow in Portugal. The family would like to express their thanks and sincere gratitude for all those who prayed and supported Carlos during his illness including the compassionate care of the 606 staff at the Health Sciences Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carloss memory to Cancer Care Manitoba, 100 Olivia Street Wpg, MB R3E 9Z9. You were always there when we needed you No task too great or small With a loving heart and a willing hand For us you did them all. Thanks for the years you gave us, And for the precious times we shared, We only pray when you left us You knew how much we cared. God saw you getting tired. When a cure was not to be, He put His arms around you and said, Come unto Me. FOREVER IN OUR MEMORIES DESCANSE EM PAZ Cropo Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements, 586-8044
