Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJACK DONNIETHORNE DURRANT It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our devoted father and grandfather, Jack Donniethorne Durrant. After a long and courageous battle with cancer Dad passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2000. Predeceased by Le, his loving wife of 55 years, he leaves to mourn his passing his sons, Neil (Rosemary), Maurice (Ramona) daughters, Ruth (Blaine), Sharon and grandchildren, Tanya, Adrian, Paul, Karen, Scot, Jessica and Emma; brothers, Doug and Wilf Leland, as well as many nieces and nephews. Born in England, March 19, 1910 where he lived in Sussex until, at the age of 19 he immigrated to the Hamiota area of southern Manitoba. Dad farmed around Hamiota until 1939 at which time he enlisted with the Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry. He spent five years in England as a member of the Provo Corps where he met and married Le. Following the war he brought his new bride to Canada and for the next several years operated his own farm north of Bowsman, MB. In 1954 they moved to Nova Scotia during which time he acquired a position with the Department of External Affairs. For the next 20 years they lived in Rome, London, Ottawa, Turkey, Iran and Germany. Dad retired from the civil service in 1975 and moved to Winnipeg where he returned to work, joining the Corps of Commissionaires until his 75th birthday. Throughout his life he was a fervent defender of the rights of others and was always willing to take up a good cause. During his years with the civil service he held numerous executive positions, including President, with the Federal Superannuates National Association. After his return to Manitoba he continued his involvement with the Anglican Church and later became a member of the Synod of Holy Trinity Church in Winnipeg. He was a founding member and active volunteer of the St. Vital Seniors Centre. He frequently visited schools where he spoke to students about his life experiences mostly during the depression and the war. We would sincerely like to thank our dear friend Toni Nelson, Michael Johnson and Isaac Froese of Hospice, his nurses from the Victoria Order of Nurses as well as the staff of floor 4 at the Victoria General Hospital for their care and compassion. We would also like to thank the clergy and congregation of Holy Trinity Church. If friends so desire donations may be made to the Hospice & Palliative Care Manitoba, 2109 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3J 0L3.
