Date of Passing: Jun 04, 2004
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRUTH ETHEL STRANGE (nee FROOME) Ruth Strange died on Sunday, June 4, 2000 at her home in St. Boniface at the age of 77 years. Ruth is survived by her son Neil, her daughter Carol, and a sister Jean Kenyon, all of Winnipeg. She was predeceased by her husband Don, in 1999, her son Greig in October of this year, as well as her brother Bill Froome and sister Phyllis Harman. Born in 1922, Ruth grew up in St. Boniface where she attended St. Josephs Academy. After graduation, she took secretarial training and was subsequently employed in the office of Harrisons and Crossfield. Ruth stayed home to raise her children until returning to the workforce in 1967 with Walter Woods Limited. Initially hired as a part-time secretary, she later took on a variety of responsibilities, eventually working full time for many years. In her teens, Ruths parents purchased a cottage at Lake Malachi, Ontario and it was there that she was happiest. She arranged to take every summer off so that her children could spend their holidays there with her. At Malachi, Ruth daily handled the "invasion" of the many kids who came to her dock to swim, ski or just hang out. At night, her cottage was open to anyone who dropped by for a game of cards or just to visit. These evenings always included a late-night snack before everyone went home, only to return the next day. Even after their children had grown, Ruth and Don continued to enjoy the friendship of those who had spent so many summers growing up in their presence. In the last few years, Ruth was unable to spend much time at Malachi but when she did, she welcomed many visitors, especially children. We are particularly grateful that our mother enjoyed a final visit to Malachi this past Victoria Day weekend. We would like to thank the many people who offered help and support to our family over these last few difficult years. Our mother was very grateful for all of the kindness and generosity she was shown and we sincerely appreciate the fact that you honoured her in such a manner. Cremation has taken place. A memorial gathering to celebrate Ruths life will be held sometime this summer at Malachi. In recognition of Ruths lifelong love of reading, donations in her memory may be made to the Winnipeg Public Library Business Office, 251 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 3P5, in care of Sherry Galagan.
