DONALD BUCHY Donald Buchy of Brandon passed away at age 79 years on June 5, 2000 at the Assiniboine Centre, Brandon after a courageous struggle with cancer. Donald leaves to mourn his passing his sons, Fred Buchy of Portage la Prairie and Durwin Buchy of Morden; daughters, Janice Buchy of Calgary, Norma MaGill of Winnipeg, Debbie (Brian) Henry of Portage la Prairie and Evelyn (Mervin) Tait of Calgary; grandson Shawn MaGill of Toronto and granddaughter Krystal Tait of Calgary. Also surviving are sister Lola (Roy) Tkachuk of Portage la Prairie; brothers, Steve (Judy) Buchy of Dauphin, Edward (Mary) Buchy of Vita, Fred (Betty) Buchy of Sudbury; sister-in-law Nellie Buchy of Dauphin and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Donald was predeceased by sisters, Mary, Eva, Emily, Olive and baby Steffie; brothers, Norman, Harry and Ernie. Donald was born in Gilbert Plains, MB on March 10, 1921 to Nellie Dutka and Fred Buchy. He worked on the family farm into his twenties, except for a stint when he served in the Armed Forces during the Second World War. He was registered with the South Saskatchewan Regiment stationed in Winnipeg, Dundurn, Regina and Shilo. In 1947, he married Doris Lozinski, the mother of his children. Donald resided in Sifton, Dauphin, Edwin (where he farmed for 12 years) and Portage la Prairie. Brandon had been home to Donald for the past 30 years where he worked in a number of positions, retiring in 1986. His fondest memories were when he played Santa Claus to countless children for many years. He had a love for animals, enjoyed gardening, travelling, visiting friends and relatives, and was an avid Blue Jays fan. Donald was a long time member and elder in his church. Funeral service was held at the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Brandon on Friday, June 9 at 1:00 p.m. with Fr. Melvin Slashinsky officiating. Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Barry Buchy, Ted Rudolph, Shawn MaGill, Brian Henry, Fred Buchy and Durwin Buchy. Many thanks to the Homecare Nursing staff and to the staff of the Assiniboine Centre for their compassionate care and understanding. Donations in memory of Donald may be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200-17th St. East, Brandon, MB, R7A 6Z2 or to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415-1st Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 2W8. Arrangements were in care of Brockie Donovan, Brandon.
