GERTRUDE LOWERY Passed away peacefully on June 7, 2000. Born in Winnipeg January 20, 1911. Gertrude was predeceased by her parents, Robert Newton and Gertrude Lowery; and by her sister Dorothy MacQuarrie. She is survived by her brother, Bob, of Norway House, Man.; by her niece Sandra Karr (Gerry) children, Stephen and Andrea; and by numerous cousins. Gertrude resided for most of her life in East Kildonan, Man., until she moved to Penticton B.C. three years ago to be near her family. Gertrudes life was devoted to helping children discover the joy of music. She was a natural teacher who had a special bond with her pupils. Many of her students have later commented that her positive influence helped shape their lives. Her teaching career began in a one-room in Lockport, Man. from which she moved to Prince Edward School, East Kildonan, where she started a part-time music program. Several years later she was transferred to Lord Wolseley School where she continued her music program and became the first itinerant music teacher in East Kildonan. The success of her choirs in competitions was legendary, and led to her appointment as Music Supervisor, a position she held for about 30 years. In 1950, she extended her musical magic into CBC Radio, partnering with producer Norman Lucas to develop two highly successfully childrens music programs: Tuneful Tales and Sunday School of the Air, as well as numerous CBC music specials. Gertrude drew from a seemingly endless well of positive light. Her enthusiasm and strength were contagious. On her retirement in 1976, a former associate commented: "In a earlier day one talked of a beautiful woman and meant physical beauty: today one talks of a beautiful person and means a radiance of spirit, a warmth and honesty in relationships, and an authenticity of lifestyle. Gertrude is both." A celebration of Gertrudes life will be held in Winnipeg at a date to be announced later. Arrangements in care of EVERDEN RUST FUNERAL SERVICES, (250) 493-4112.
