BRUCE GURDEN BOWER Peacefully, on Friday, June 16, 2000, at the age of 55, Bruce passed away after a courageous fourteen-month battle with cancer. His beloved wife Joy Kulachok survives him. Predeceased by his parents, Doris (nee Dunnett) and Gurden Bower, his first wife Pamela Richardson and most recently, his aunt Myrtle Bowack. Bruce was proud of his Transcona roots. He attended Transcona Collegiate and then graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree in Civil Engineering. In his own inimitable style, this was done on the six-year party program. He started his career at the Ministry of Transport building airports in remote northern communities. In preparation for a new position there, Bruce went on a trial interview with the City of Winnipeg. He was hired and spent the next 25 years working as Project Manager for the Construction Branch, overseeing such projects as the pavement reconstruction at Portage Avenue and Main Street. Bruce also played a role in helping to fight the Flood of the Century. His efforts ensured that three million sandbags reached their destinations. Bruce was a man of diverse passions. He was an avid sportsman, competitive clay target shooter and conservationist. Over a ten-year period, he was an active member on two separate Ducks Unlimited committees. Bruce was past president of the Winnipeg Trap and Skeet Club and the Manitoba Trap Association. In 1998, he was inducted into the Manitoba Trap Shooting Hall of Honor. As Venue Chairman for the club, he spearheaded the building and operation of facilities for the XIII Pan American Games. This facility was subsequently named in his honour. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 21 at 3:30 p.m. in Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway. Interment will follow at a later date. The family would like to thank all those friends who gave unselfishly of their time, expertise and support. They would also like to thank Dr. Daeninck and all the staff at St. Boniface Hospital on 5A and the Palliative Care Unit. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, St. Boniface Palliative Care or Cancercare Manitoba. GOOD NIGHT SWEET PRINCE THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
