WALTER C. MacDONELL Walter C. MacDonell passed away June 19, 2000 at the age of 88 years, surrounded by his family. Walter was born in Winnipeg in 1911, the youngest son of Alex and Tillie MacDonell, the brother of John, Gordon, George and Ruth (McRae). He is survived by Gordon (Doris) and his sister-in-law Peggy. Walter leaves his loving wife Norma, whom he married in 1938; their family, David (Margaret), Alex, Norman (Rosemary), Anne (Randy) Manikel; eight grandchildren, Ken, Cheryl (Steve) Baldwin; Pamela (Enzo) Pagliaroli, Liza, Robert; Jason, Kristi and Kelly Manikel. Walter attended Luxton and St. Johns Schools and after graduating from the University of Manitoba as a Chartered Accountant he became a partner in the firm of Millar, MacDonald & Co. He joined Manitoba Pool Elevators in 1951 as Controller and Treasurer until retirement in 1975. Walter served for several terms as a municipal councilman in West Kildonan and was on the Board of Manitoba Medical Service. Walter was an active member of the United Church throughout his lifetime. As a young man at St. Johns United he served as a youth leader, teacher and elder. In later years he served as Church Treasurer, Presbytery Representative and Chairman of the Board of St. Andrews River Heights United Church. Walter and Norma spent 25 years of active retirement travelling to southern Texas and Victoria in the winters. Their greatest enjoyment in retirement has been their many friends at Fred Douglas Place. Walter was clearly a warm and caring person who gave generously of his time and talents to his family, neighbours, and the wider community. In always going that extra mile, he greatly enriched the lives of all with whom he associated. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at Knox United Church, 400 Edmonton St., Winnipeg on June 21 at 1:00 p.m. In memory of Walter, friends are encouraged to donate to the charity of their choice.
