LAURA IRENE FRIESEN (nee SMALL) Laura passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2000, after a courageous four year struggle with ovarian cancer. She was predeceased by her parents, Milford and Lilian Small, and her brother Glenn, a casualty of the Korean war. She leaves behind many who loved her. She will be greatly missed by her family, beloved husband Henry; children, Rick, Kerry, Sandra, Shaun, Esther, Dane, and Tracy; grandchildren, Kelly, Tammy, Natasha, Carl, Erika, and Maureen; great-grandchildren, Brittany, Devon, and Samira. In addition, her passing is greatly mourned by her siblings, Muriel, Joyce, Ruth, Alex, Cliff, and Bunny. Born on December 3, 1928 in Watson Saskatchewan she lived her adult life in Manitoba. Her marriage to Henry Friesen on April 25, 1953 began forty years of life in Gretna, followed by another decade of new friends, and experiences in Winnipeg. New friends, church, and singing in the choir added joy and meaning to her life. Her spirit of generosity, compassion, and love for life, touched the lives of everyone around her. Flowers and grandchildren flourished in her presence. She was a gracious host. Her home was always open and many enjoyed her hospitality. She was a gift to those she loved. Her struggle with cancer ushered new people into her life, special people who were greatly appreciated. Laura and the family would like to thank the staff at the St. Boniface Hospital for their care and compassion. We offer thanks to Doctors Lotecki, Heywood, Daneek, Crowe, and Harlos. Also we would like to thank the staffs of Palliative Care and 3B Gyney. We would especially like to thank Rachel from Palliative care, and Melanie from VON, for their special presence during Lauras illness. The funeral service for Laura Friesen will be held Friday, June 23, at 11:00 a.m., at the Portage Avenue Mennonite Brethren Church, followed by a committal service at the Gretna Cemetery, at 3:00 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the National Ovarian Cancer Association, or the Manitoba Cancer Research and Treatment Foundation.
