He is survived by three sons and two daughters, Don and Sandi Loewen of Winnipeg, Doreen Loewen of Altona, Ruth and Greg Gerolamy of Emerson, Gord and Tammy Loewen of Saskatoon, and Richard and Deb Loewen of Lethbridge; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Dad enlisted in the Canadian Army, November 9, 1943 and was discharged May 15, 1946, married Elizabeth Hildebrand on May 2, 1948. By 1963 they had five children together and lived in Halbstadt, Man. In 1967 he moved the family to Emerson where he worked at Sawatzkys Brothers in Emerson as a butcher/meatcutter. Long hours on his feet took its toll, which ended in a career change. He then was hired by the Department of Public Works at Canada Customs in Emerson. He spent a few years there, and his last years prior to retirement were spent at the Emerson Hospital and Care Home, maintaining the grounds and buildings. Gardening, grounds-keeping and woodworking were some of his passions, he always had plenty of vegetables for family, friends and neighbours. Dad enjoyed watching sports, favourites including baseball and hockey. He was an avid supporter of children and grandchildren in all activities throughout their childhood years. He was very proud of his service in the army, it was always his hope that future generations would learn to appreciate the sacrifices made by war veterans.
