He was predeceased by his wife Sara in 1997; daughter Susie; and sons, Abe and Eddie; brothers, Bernhard, Anton, David, Diedrich, Frank, Cornie, and Henry; sisters, Helen, Tina and Annie. Dad will be lovingly remembered by his children, Helen and husband Clark, daughter-in-law Betty and husband Dave, Bernie and wife Simone, Dave and wife Dawna, Sadie and special friend Craig; his grandchildren, Norman of Mexico, Glen (Tonya) Tammy (Ralph) of Vancouver, Darryll and Brad; Jeff (Elaine), Debbie (Shawn), Shelley, Neil, Dana (Vic), Daphne (Rob), Dawn (Jay), Stephen and David; his great-grandchildren, Dylan and Ashten, Madison of Vancouver, Christine and Ryan, Sara, and Victor, and Madison. Also survived by brother Ed (Helen) and sisters, Agatha and Trudy (Aron) and the Friesen and Bergen families. Dad was born on August 27, 1920 in Plum Coulie, MB. He married Sara Bergen on July 6, 1941. Dad always enjoyed taking courses to further his education. He proudly attained his certificate as a Stationery Engineer. He had many occupations, among them working for Safeway for many years and retiring from the Winnipeg Post office. Dad and Mom moved many times during their married life and shared many adventures together. Some of Dads favourite pastimes were playing and watching baseball, listening to music, and playing the guitar and organ. He also enjoyed games, especially cribbage and canasta, but the thing he enjoyed the most was spending time with his family. There hardly was a time when you didnt see him without a grandchild perched on his shoulder. "Dad, because of your illness, we feel we were deprived of many years of your laughter, wit, charm and love. We will miss you dearly. Thanks for the memories." Funeral services will be Friday, June 23 at 3:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., with viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. A gathering of family and friends will be in the Chapel Lawn Reception Centre. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren and flower bearer will be David Burgess. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff on the Spruce Wing of the Fred Douglas Lodge for their sincere kindness and compassion shown towards our father during his lengthy stay.
