Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGILL LAIRD ROSS On Sunday, June 25, 2000, at the Portage District General Hospital, Gill Ross of MacGregor, Man. and formerly a longtime resident of the Edwin District passed away after a brief illness at age 88 years. Gill was born on February 2, 1912 to John and Bessie Ross at Treherne, Man. where he was raised and received his education. Later, Gill worked as a labourer until 1940, when he enlisted for Service to his Country with the Fort Garry Horse. After receiving training at Shilo, Man. and Barrie, Ont., Gill served overseas in various locations in Europe until his discharge in August of 1945. Upon his return to Canada, Gill took over his wife Jeans family farm in the Edwin District where he resided until moving to MacGregor in 1993. Gills life centered around his home and family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were his pride and joy. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and sport fisherman. In his earlier years he truly enjoyed playing baseball. After retiring from farming Gill spent his winters at Mesa, Arizona where he became an avid golfer. He was predeceased by his first wife Jean (nee Murray) in 1978; his son Stanley in 1994 and by three sisters, Leila Corydon, Wilma De Vrieze and Myrtle Murray. Gill leaves to cherish his loving memory, his wife Agnes of MacGregor; his daughter Lorraine and son-in-law Bill Demman of Portage la Prairie, Man.; daughter-in-law Lynn of Winnipeg; granddaughter Melinda Boyd; grandson Murray (Brenda) Demman, granddaughter Sandra (Dave) Wheeler and grandson Jim (Colette) Ross; great-grandchildren, Caitlin and Christine Boyd, Michelle, Nicole and Cameron Wheeler and Kyle Ross. He also leaves stepdaughters, Roberta (Steve) Ftoma and Pat (John) Evers and their families; sister-in-law Isabel Boak and brother-in-law George Murray and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited for a time of Visitation on Thursday, June 29 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel, 56 Royal Rd. South, Portage. Funeral service will be conducted by Rev. Jean Bryden from McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel on Friday, June 30 at 1:30 p.m. Members of the Treherne Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion #120 will conduct a Legion Graveside Service. Interment will follow at the Hillside Cemetery, Portage la Prairie. As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Gills memory to The Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation in care of Catherine Newham - Portage Office, 103 Wilkinson Crescent, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 1A7 or to the Canadian Cancer Society (Manitoba Division), 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 2B7. A tree will be planted and cared for in memory of Gill at Evergreen Memorial Gardens by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel who are entrusted with the arrangements.
