HELEN MARGUERITE (McCOMB) HURST Quiet, peacefully, and with dignity, Helen, entered into rest on June 25, 2000, surrounded by her family, her flowers and her books. Helen was 93 years and 4 months. Helen, the daughter of Herbert and Grace McComb, was born on January 29, 1907 in Chelsey, Ont. Helen came to Shoal Lake on July 10, 1910 with her parents, brother Robert and sister Gertie. In 1914, a brother, James, joined family, some 90 years age to be exact. Helen married David Alexander Hurst on June 20, 1929, and a son, Roger, joined their family on June 4, 1941. Helen and David farmed the SE 1/27-13-23 until 1934 when they moved to the N 1/225-16-23. In June, 1973, Helen and Dave moved into their new home in Shoal Lake. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary prior to Daves passing on March 11, 1986. On January 29, 2000 Helen celebrated her 93rd birthday with a family dinner in her own home. Helens family were most important to her; she lived her religion rather than preaching it and was an inspiration to all who were charmed with her friendship, determination and her presence. Helen made many cups of tea for family and friends, taking great pride in her family and their accomplishments. Helen was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Shoal Lake and also of Westminster United Church Women. After moving to town, Helen exhibited her handiwork at the Shoal Lake Fair. She enjoyed bingo and attending family and community events while she was able. Helen is survived by her son Roger of Virden; sisters-in-law, Nellie McComb (Wetaskiwan) and Jessie Weston (Surrey, B.C.) "special friends": Kathy (Dearle) Slimmon, Wendy (Larry) Mychasiw, Laurie Boon (penpal from Virden) many admired nieces, nephews, cousins and their families from the McComb, Rogers and Hurst families. Helen had many good friends and extended family members including her home care girls she treasured greatly. Helen was predeceased by husband Dave; her parents, Herbert and Grace McComb, Bert and Mary McComb, Clarence and Gertie McKinnon, Jim McComb, Walter and Myrtle Hurst, Ella Hurst, Hazel, Howard McNulty, and several aunts, uncles and cousins in Ontario. A memorial service for Helen will be held on Friday, June 30 at 2:00 p.m. in the Westminster United Church, Shoal Lake. Interment will follow in the Shoal Lake Municipal Cemetery. If friends so desire donations may be made to the Helen McComb Hurst Scholarship Fund in care of Shoal Lake Branch, Strathclair Credit Union, P.O. Box 129, Shoal Lake, MB, R0J 1Z0. Raes Funeral Service of Shoal Lake are in care of arrangements.
