YUEN CHEUNG MA Yuen Cheung Ma, Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Manitoba and long time Vice Chairman of the Winnipeg Chinese Benevolent Association, died peacefully at St. Boniface General Hospital on Thursday, 22nd of June 2000 at the age of 90. Prof. Ma was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Edith Shu Min Wang Ma, who died February, 1993. He will be lovingly remembered by sister Shindon Ma; children, Ada Ma Lin, Sara Ma Hacker, Linda Ma Sung, Tony Ma, Tina Ma, Mark Ma and their spouses; 12 grandchildren; niece Hui Q. Hwang; and numerous other family and friends in Canada, the United States, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China. Prof. Ma was born in Canton, China in 1910. After a BA and MA in economics, he earned a PhD from the London School of Economics in 1942 under famed economist J.M. Keynes. Until the early 1960s he served the Republic of China in Taiwan in several capacities, including Member of Parliament, Deputy Minister of Finance and Vice Chairman of the Import-Export Council. He also taught at several institutions in Hong Kong and Taiwan. After a brief sojourn at Tusculum College in Tennessee, Prof. Ma joined the Faculty of Economics at St. Pauls College at the University of Manitoba in 1966. An enthusiastic mentor and tireless educator, he taught countless students. He continued to advise students at the University after his retirement with unabated enthusiasm. Prof. and Mrs. Ma were also well known in the local and national Chinese communities. Together they sponsored several scholarships at the University of Manitoba and institutions in Taiwan and Mainland China. A viewing will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, 29th of June at Kerrs Funeral Chapel, 120 Adelaide St. Funeral service will take place at 1:00 p.m. Friday, 30th of June at the Winnipeg Chinese Lutheran Church, 200 Dalhousie Dr. Interment will follow at St. Vital Cemetery.
