NADIA GAWRACHYNSKA (nee Kalynowych) Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 28, 2000 at Holy Family Nursing Home at the age of 86. She was predeceased by her father Ivan in 1927, her husband Evhen and her brother Myron in 1941 and her mother Evhenia in 1957. With wonderful memories to cherish she leaves to mourn her son Ihor, daughter-in-law Maria, grandchildren Tyrsa, Areta and Alexander and relatives and friends in Canada, U.S., Australia, Ukraine and Poland. Nadia was born in Boryslaw, Western Ukraine on January 2, 1914. She completed her studies at the Musical Institute of Lvov, Ukraine, majoring in piano. She taught at the Musical Institute of Zolochiw, participating in recitals as well as giving private piano lessons. She married Evhen in 1938. The Second World War brought her many tragedies among them the loss of her husband and brother during the Soviet occupation of Western Ukraine. After the war she immigrated to Canada and arrived in Winnipeg on Christmas Eve 1948. She worked at Stall Sportswear for ten years. In the early 1960s, she gained employment with the editorial staff of The Canadian Farmer (a Ukrainian language weekly newspaper) and worked there till her retirement in 1981. Her greatest passion was her involvement in the Ukrainian Youth Association PLAST which added enjoyment and meaning to her life. She helped build the organization in Winnipeg from its beginnings in 1948-49. She was involved with different age groups, always stressing "Character building" as the main component of scouting. Letter writing was a fond pastime and she developed extensive correspondence with friends and many journalists throughout North America and Europe. Towards the end of her life she worked on a publication compiling the bibliographical works of her father Ivan. Her greatest joy during her retirement was being able to spend time with her grandchildren. To her granddaughters Tyrsa and Areta she passed on the love for reading and playing the piano. With her grandson Alex, she shared a special humour. They enjoyed making each other laugh. They all held a special place in her heart. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to Dr. B. Gorski and the staff of 2A at Holy Family Nursing Home for their loving and compassionate care. Panachyda will be sung 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 29 at Sts.
