SAUL SHAFFER Saul Shaffer passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 24, 2000 at the St. Boniface Hospital with his family at his side. He is survived by his wife Molly; sister Helen; sons, Ian and Marvin; grandchildren, Kevin, Corinne, Craig, Kerri, Blake and Jodi; and great-grandchildren, Garrett and Sydney Michelle. His brothers, Harry and Mickey predeceased him. Saul was born in Winnipeg on June 1, 1916. He grew up in Yorkton, Sask., graduating from high school at age 16 with the Governor General medal. His family moved back to Winnipeg in 1932 where he got a job with Stall and Sons. Saul worked for Stalls for the next 50 years becoming manager of Stall Fur Company Ltd. He completed his career as president of Sterling Stalls leather company. Saul did not go to university after high school, as he needed to support his family after his father died. However, he did read and study all his life and enrolled in numerous courses at the University of Winnipeg after his retirement in 1984. A kind and gentle man, Saul saw the best in everyone. He was well liked and admired by all who knew him. He loved children. He encouraged young men and women in the factory to go back to school. He was always available to his nieces, nephews, and others who knew and loved him to help them deal with the challenges they faced. Funeral services were held at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue on June 27 with interment at the Shaarey Zedek Memorial Park. His six grandchildren, Corinnes husband, Matthew Jacobson, and nephews, Yale Shaffer, Ian Laxer, Ron Laxer and Errol Wright served as official and honorary pallbearers. He will be missed by all those he touched.
