RACHEL MARTIN Peacefully at the Golden Door Nursing Home, Rachel Martin passed away at the age of 104 years on Friday, June 30, 2000. Rachel was predeceased by her husband Jerome in 1965. She is survived by two sons, George and Rene (Charlotte) stepdaughter Elsa; son-in-law Todd, all of Winnipeg; daughter-in-law Esther (Ontario) nieces, Margaret and Cori; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and numerous friends. She is predeceased by sons, Harry (Eileen), Michel; daughter Yvonne (Maurice) stepdaughter Nellie; stepson Joe; son-in-law Bob; and daughter-in-law Bertha. Rachel came to Canada from Wavelghem, Belgium with Jerome in 1914 when she was 19 years old. They settled on a farm in Mariapolis, MB. Times were very hard, but with courage they faced the future. Learning another language besides their native Flemish, getting used to the vastness of this great country. Hearing wolves howling close by their cabin at night and bearing children with only the help of a mid-wife were some of their hardships. They later moved to St. Boniface where they lived greater part of their lives. Fifteen years on one location off Speers Rd. farming and gardening on the ten acres that is now a good portion of the Windsor Park area. They lived in Birds Hill for a few years until her husband passed away. She moved to an apartment in St. Boniface until the age of 89 years. Through the years Rachels home was one of great hospitality, kindness and good cheer. Her good sense of humour helped her and others over many a hurdle. We will all remember the many delicious loaves of home made bread and the tastiest rice pudding she gave so generously to her family and friends. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 5 at 11:00 a.m. in Green Acres Funeral Chapel, Hwy. No. 1 East at Navin Road. Interment will follow in Green Acres Memorial Gardens. Special thanks to doctors, nurses and staff at the Golden Door Nursing Home for all their loving care and kindness. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Rachels memory to a favourite charity of their choice. "Rachel has lived in three Centuries" GREEN ACRES FUNERAL CHAPEL 222-3241
