MARY JANE SOMERVILLE After a long and healthy life, on Saturday, July 1, 2000, Mary passed away at the Deer Lodge Centre at the age of 97 years. She was predeceased by her husband William and daughter Maureen Sklanka. Mary is survived by her granddaughter Karen Araujo and husband Jose; great-grandson Adam; son-in-law William Sklanka; numerous nieces and nephews in the UK and US and special friends, Mary and Henry Plenert and Helen Hayek. Mary arrived from Scotland in 1929 and settled in Weston. She was an active member of the community and St. Patricks Roman Catholic Church. Over the years, she worked at the Eatons Mail Order, as a custodian at Grant Park High School and the Board Office of Winnipeg School Division #1. Mary enjoyed three trips "home" to Scotland with her family. She was happiest cooking, baking and sharing her famous fruitcake and shortbread. Being an independent person, Mary was proud to have remained in her Weston home until her stroke in 1995 and never having lost her Scottish brogue. Marys Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, July 6, at 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Memories in Wojciks Funeral Chapel, 2157 Portage Avenue at Sharp Boulevard, with Rev. Msgr. Ward Jamieson presiding. Interment will follow in Brookside Cemetery. Our family would like to thank the 3rd floor staff of Oakview Place and the Tact Unit of Deer Lodge Centre for their care and kindness. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Stroke Recovery Association of Manitoba Inc., 1-333 Vaughan St., Winnipeg, Man., R3B 3J9.
