JAMES IRVING WHITFORD Peacefully, early on July 8, 2000, James Irving (Irv) Whitford passed away, beloved husband of Ruth (nee Gustafson), cherished father of Jan and her husband Michael Stevenson of Toronto and Doug and his wife Jan (nee LaMonica) of Oakville, Ontario, and loving grandfather to Kristina, Michael and Caitlin, who will long remember their Boppa. Also surviving is his sister, Eileen Starr and her family of Toronto, Mississauga and Vancouver. He will be sadly missed by all of these and by his many in-laws, relatives and friends, who will cherish the memories he has left with them. He was predeceased by his first wife Betty (nee Galashan) who passed away in Burlington in September, 1968, and also by his sisters, Jean Norris of Danville Illinois in 1980 and Muriel Macmillan of North Hollywood California in 1989. Born in Brantford, Ontario on May 10, 1912, Irv served in England, Italy and northwest Europe during the Second World War. On his return home, he worked at A.V. Roe Turbine Engine at Malton, and later at Wood Alexander Wholesale Hardware in Hamilton. An honorary life member of the Hamilton chapter of the Administrative Management Society and a long time member of Brant Lodge A.F.&A.M. in Burlington, he moved to Winnipeg in 1969 as Vice-President of Marshall Wells, where he remained until his retirement. After retirement he and Ruth thoroughly enjoyed their summers spent in Ontario where they were always welcomed by his family and many friends. And in at least a part of each winter cold spell they journeyed to many different warmer climes. He often remarked that he was blessed beyond his entitlement with the longevity to enjoy so many years of such active and enjoyable retirement. Memorial service will take place at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway at Furby at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11. Interment will be at the family plot in Greenwood Cemetery in Burlington, Ontario. Special thanks to Dr. Doermer and the nurses and staff of Concordia Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to The Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg Manitoba R3A 1P6, or to a charity of your choice.
